How to succeed in online classes

If you’re new to studying virtually, it can take some time to find your rhythm and get up to speed. To help you out, we take a look at some tips to help you focus and succeed with virtual learning.

Build a routine

Establishing a learning routine is one of the most important ways to set yourself up for success.

If you keep up positive habits and stay focused, you’ll soon see the results. Here are some tips and tricks to maximise your daily routine:

  • Virtual learning from school – if possible, follow the daily routine of your school timetable with breaks at recess and lunchtime. At the start of each week, check when and where your online classes are timetabled. Be on-time to your allocated learning space and check your technology a few minutes before class starts.
  • Virtual learning from home – set aside time and space in your day to study, and stick to your learning routine once you have it. Plan time for focused study at your desk, as well as morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. Make sure you build in time throughout the day to re-set and re-focus.

Treat online classes as you would in person

One of the keys to success in online learning is to treat the experience as you would with an in-person class. This means approaching your studies in the same way you would if you had to attend the class in person. Hold yourself to the same standards, making sure you’re organised, on time, and ready to learn.

Write up your notes

Whether you attend a virtual classroom or access learning on demand, you should aim to make time to write up your notes. Writing your own notes helps to deepen your understanding of a topic by putting it in your own words.

For virtual classes, try to engage with learning ‘in the moment’, rather than writing notes straight away. Most likely, you’ll be able to revisit the recording later. If your class is on-demand, you can pause and take notes as you go.

Contribute

Learning is a two-way process. It’s just as important to attend classes as it is to discuss the topic and share ideas with your teacher and classmates. Get involved, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to seek help if you need it.

You may also find that there are discussion groups, forums, or message boards where you can post questions. Try to contribute to these where you can, whether it’s reading what others have written or asking questions yourself.

Follow up

Once your class is over, spend some time thinking about the subject you covered. Note down any questions you might have and follow up with your teacher. Make sure that you feel comfortable and confident with the topic before attending the next class. If you have any issues, check in with the support teacher (or IT support) at your home or virtual school.
