Key skills for online learning

My progress: 0% complete

For many students, the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in virtual learning are already there. It’s just a case of learning how to apply them.

Time management & organisation

When studying virtually, it’s up to you to manage your own time and workload.

A good place to start is by keeping a diary or planner with your daily and weekly schedule. You can then identify and add key dates, such as assignments and exams, so they don’t take you by surprise. Daily to-do lists can also help you keep on track, as well as giving you the satisfaction of ticking off your achievements.

Digital skills

To succeed with online learning, you need to know how to apply essential digital skills to your studies.

It’s also important to know how to use digital tools and online resources offered by your virtual learning provider. Equally, understanding how to develop relationships and build a support network is essential.

Communication

When you’re studying online, strong communication and collaboration skills are essential. These include:

  • Active listening and learning – listen attentively to your teachers and classmates when they speak. Show respect by taking time to respond and ask questions to deepen your learning and understanding.
  • Acknowledging and supporting others – if you are participating in a virtual classroom, keep your camera on so your teacher and peers can see your responses (nodding, smiling, etc). Unmute yourself to ask questions and take part in group discussions. If you decide to turn off your camera, make use of emojis and the chat function to thank others for their contribution and ask follow-up questions.
  • Being respectful – remember to demonstrate your school values and treat your teacher and peers with respect.
